Work Motivation Assessment
~5 min · 18 questions · Free partial report
Eighteen items asking why you do your current work, placed along the self-determination continuum from fully autonomous (intrinsic enjoyment, alignment with identity, personal importance) through controlled (guilt, self-esteem pressure, external rewards) to absent (amotivation). Six subscales, three items each. The shape of the profile matters more than any single score: a peak on intrinsic with low amotivation looks very different from a peak on external with high amotivation.
Eighteen items mapping six types of work motivation along the self-determination continuum.
- Understand what drives your work behavior — from genuine enjoyment to external pressure — and where your motivational balance sits.

Why trust this instrument.
NOESIS adaptation inspired by Tremblay et al.'s (2009) Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale (WEIMS). Eighteen independently developed items on a 7-point correspondence scale across six subscales on the self-determination continuum: intrinsic motivation, integrated regulation, identified regulation, introjected regulation, external regulation, and amotivation. All positively keyed. The original WEIMS reports alpha .64-.89 across subscales. Scored as mean per subscale (range 1-7). No total score by design — the profile shape is the finding.

The theory behind this test.
Work Motivation (Self-Determination Theory)
Work motivation along the self-determination continuum, from fully autonomous (intrinsic, integrated, identified) through controlled (introjected, external) to absent (amotivation). The quality of motivation matters more than its quantity: autonomous forms predict engagement and well-being, controlled forms predict compliance and strain.

Questions the report answers.
Do I work because I enjoy it?
The most autonomous form: working for the inherent pleasure and satisfaction of the activity itself.
Do I work for personally important reasons?
You have internalized the value of the work — it aligns with goals you find meaningful, even if the work itself is not always fun.
Have I lost sight of why I work?
The absence of motivation. High amotivation signals disconnection from purpose — worth paying attention to.
Who benefits most.
Mid-career professional
Feels the spark has faded and wants to understand whether the issue is the work, the context, or the motivation itself.
Organizational development team
Mapping motivation quality across departments to design better job conditions.
Frequently asked questions
What is self-determination theory?
A theory by Deci and Ryan (1985) proposing that motivation ranges from autonomous (doing something because you want to) to controlled (doing it because you must). The quality of motivation predicts well-being and performance better than its quantity.
What does high amotivation mean?
It means you cannot see why you do this work anymore. It is a signal worth paying attention to — not a defect, but a sign that something about the fit between you and your current role needs examination.
