Career Decision Self-Efficacy Profile
~7 min · 25 questions · Free partial report
A 25-item profile of your confidence in performing the tasks needed to make career decisions. Five dimensions — self-appraisal, occupational information gathering, goal selection, planning, and problem solving — each measured by five independently developed items. The result is a confidence map: where you feel sure and where you hesitate, which tells you what to work on rather than whether you are ready.
A 25-item profile of your confidence in five core career decision tasks, from self-appraisal to problem solving.
- Map where you feel confident and where you hesitate in the career decision process, so you can direct effort at the gaps rather than circling the whole question.

Why trust this instrument.
This assessment is inspired by the Career Decision Self-Efficacy construct (Betz, Klein & Taylor, 1996), which applies Bandura's self-efficacy theory to career decision-making. The original CDMSE-SF measures confidence across five task domains: self-appraisal, occupational information, goal selection, planning, and problem solving. The original reports alpha reliabilities of .73 to .94 across subscales. This NOESIS profile uses 25 independently developed items measuring the same five constructs, scored as the mean per subscale on a 1-5 confidence scale.

The theory behind this test.
Career Decision Self-Efficacy
Self-efficacy applied to career decision-making: the belief in one's capacity to successfully complete tasks necessary for making career decisions. Five task domains: self-appraisal, occupational information gathering, goal selection, planning, and problem solving. Grounded in Bandura's self-efficacy theory and Crites' career maturity model.

Questions the report answers.
How well do you know your own career-relevant strengths?
Self-appraisal confidence reflects how clearly you see yourself in a career context — not your self-esteem in general.
Can you find out what a career really involves?
Low occupational information confidence often just means you haven't tried yet, not that the information is hard to find.
Can you commit to a direction?
Goal selection confidence is about tolerating the uncertainty of choosing — most people can narrow down, but committing is harder.
Can you turn a direction into steps?
Planning confidence bridges the gap between knowing what you want and knowing how to get there.
Can you handle setbacks in your career path?
Problem-solving confidence predicts persistence: high scorers adapt when plans fail rather than abandoning the goal.
Who benefits most.
University student choosing a major
Facing a fork with limited work experience. The profile shows whether the bottleneck is self-knowledge, information, or commitment.
Mid-career professional considering a pivot
Has experience but doubts whether it transfers. The planning and problem-solving subscales reveal readiness to act on a decision once made.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an intelligence test?
No. It measures your confidence in career decision tasks, not your ability. Confidence and ability are related but distinct — you can be capable but unsure, or sure but mistaken.
What if I score low on everything?
A uniformly low profile means the career decision process as a whole feels daunting. That is a useful signal: it suggests starting with one manageable step (gathering information, for instance) rather than trying to decide everything at once.
Can my scores change?
Yes. Career decision self-efficacy is a state-like confidence that responds to experience, education, and practice. Completing a career counselling course or an informational interview typically raises specific subscale scores.
