Work Design Assessment
~20 min · 77 questions · Free partial report
A 77-item assessment of your job's structural characteristics across 21 dimensions — from autonomy and task variety to social support and physical demands. Based on Morgeson and Humphrey's integrative model that organizes every measurable property of a job into four categories: what the tasks are, what knowledge they require, what social context surrounds them, and what physical conditions they impose. The result is a profile that shows where the job is rich and where it is lean, which is useful both for the person doing the job and for anyone designing or redesigning it.
Seventy-seven items mapping twenty-one dimensions of your job — from autonomy and complexity to social support and physical demands.
- Map the structural characteristics of your current role so you can see where it stretches you and where it leaves you flat, and have a common language for discussing job design with a manager or team.

Why trust this instrument.
NOESIS adaptation based on the Work Design Questionnaire construct (Morgeson & Humphrey, 2006). Seventy-seven independently developed items on a 5-point agreement scale across 21 subscales in four categories: Task (autonomy, variety, significance, identity, feedback), Knowledge (complexity, information processing, problem solving, skill variety, specialization), Social (support, interdependence, external interaction, feedback from others), and Contextual (ergonomics, demands, conditions, equipment). All positively keyed. The original WDQ reports alpha .71-.93 across 21 subscales (N = 540). Scored as mean per subscale (range 1-5).

Questions the report answers.
Do I control when I work?
How much freedom you have to set your own schedule and pace.
Is my work varied or repetitive?
Whether the job asks you to do many different things or the same thing over and over.
Do I get support from people around me?
How much help, advice, and encouragement comes from coworkers and supervisors.
Who benefits most.
The stretched manager
Managing a team whose roles were never formally designed and wants a structured way to see what each job actually looks like before reorganizing.
The restless professional
Feeling understimulated but unsure whether the problem is the tasks, the social context, or the conditions — wants data instead of a vague sense of dissatisfaction.
Frequently asked questions
Why does this test have so many questions?
Work design has 21 distinct dimensions — things like autonomy, social support, and physical demands — and each needs at least three items to measure reliably. A shorter test would either drop dimensions or measure them badly, and the whole point is the complete profile.
Can my employer see my results?
Only if you explicitly share them. The profile describes job characteristics, not your performance, so it is often useful as a shared reference for redesign conversations — but that is your choice to make.
What if my job has changed recently?
Answer for the role as it is right now. If the job is in transition, the profile captures the current state, which is exactly the baseline you need before making further changes.
