NOESIS adaptation of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (Kristensen et al., 2005)

~6 min · 19 questions · Free partial report

This test contains sensitive content. Results are private and not shared with employers unless you explicitly consent.

A 19-item assessment measuring burnout across three domains: personal, work-related, and client-related exhaustion. Based on Kristensen et al. (2005).

Where does your exhaustion actually come from? Separate general fatigue from what your job — and the people in it — are costing you.

What you'll discover
  • Identify whether you are experiencing burnout and in which domain — personal exhaustion, work-related fatigue, or client-interaction depletion.

No signup required to start. The Partial Report is free at the end. The Complete costs $9.90, if and when you want it.

Dimensions

What this test measures

P

Personal Burnout

Degree of general physical and psychological fatigue and exhaustion, regardless of its source. High scores reflect feeling tired, worn out, and depleted in daily life.

EnergizedExhausted

W

Work-Related Burnout

Fatigue and exhaustion you attribute specifically to your work. High scores reflect feeling drained by the job itself — as if every working hour costs more energy than it gives back.

Engaged at WorkDrained by Work

C

Client-Related Burnout

Fatigue and exhaustion attributed to working with clients, patients, students, or other service recipients. High scores reflect depleted energy specifically in people-facing work.

Scientific basis

Why trust this instrument.

Based on the model behind the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (Kristensen et al., 2005), this assessment uses 19 independently developed items to measure exhaustion in three attributable domains: personal (α = 0.87), work-related (α = 0.87), and client-related (α = 0.85). Separating the source of fatigue is the model's key insight — it shows whether recovery efforts should target life load, the job, or people-facing work specifically. The items were written by NOESIS to represent the published constructs; this is not the original CBI.

  • How much is work draining you?

Higher scores indicate that exhaustion is specifically attributed to work demands.

  • How much does working with people deplete you?

Higher scores indicate emotional depletion from client or patient interactions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does this assessment measure?

It measures burnout across three domains: personal (general exhaustion), work-related (exhaustion attributed to work), and client-related (exhaustion from working with people).

How does this relate to the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory?

This assessment measures the same burnout constructs defined by Kristensen et al. (2005). All items are independently developed by NOESIS.

Is this test scientifically validated?

It is built on the model behind the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (Kristensen et al., 2005), which redefined burnout around attributable exhaustion. The items are a NOESIS adaptation — independently written to represent the published constructs (α = 0.85-0.87 across scales) — and have not undergone independent validation, so treat results as structured self-reflection.

What do high and low scores mean?

High scores on a scale mean frequent exhaustion in that domain — general life, the job itself, or people-facing work. Comparing the three matters more than any single number: high work-related but low personal burnout points at the job, not at you. Persistent high scores are a signal to seek support, not a diagnosis.
