Need for Cognition

Cacioppo, J. T. & Petty, R. E. · 1982

別名: NFC · Cognitive Motivation

Need for cognition is the stable individual difference in the tendency to engage in and enjoy effortful thinking. It is a motivational disposition, not an ability: high scorers seek out problems that require deliberation and find cognitive effort intrinsically rewarding, while low scorers are not less capable but rely more readily on heuristics, source cues and other people's conclusions. The construct's original purpose was to explain why the same persuasive message changes some people's minds through argument quality and others' through peripheral cues.

Individual difference in the tendency to engage in and enjoy effortful cognitive activity. People high in NFC seek out, engage in, and enjoy complex thinking tasks; those low in NFC prefer simpler cognitive tasks and rely more on cognitive heuristics.

歴史的背景

The term originates with Cohen, Stotland and Wolfe in 1955, but the modern construct and scale are Cacioppo and Petty's 1982 work, developed as the individual-difference component of the Elaboration Likelihood Model of persuasion. The original 34-item scale was reduced to the widely used 18-item form by Cacioppo, Petty and Kao in 1984. The construct proved unusually durable, migrating out of persuasion research into education, decision-making, misinformation susceptibility and, more recently, work on how people interact with algorithmic and AI-generated recommendations.

実践的応用

Need for cognition predicts depth of information processing, resistance to misinformation and susceptibility to argument quality rather than surface cues — findings applied in health communication and science messaging, where the same content must reach both dispositions. In education it predicts engagement with open-ended and inquiry-based tasks. For self-knowledge it is useful precisely because it is not an ability measure: knowing that one avoids effortful deliberation is actionable in a way that an intelligence score is not.

測定方法

Measured with a self-report Likert scale (18-item short form) producing a single continuous score; interpreted normatively, with no cutoff and no ability inference.

批評と制限事項

The scale correlates substantially with openness to experience and with verbal ability, raising a persistent incremental-validity question. Because thinking is socially valued, the items are transparently desirable and scores inflate under evaluation. Cross-cultural work is thinner than the construct's ubiquity suggests, with most validation in Western educated samples where intellectual engagement carries particular status. Some critics also argue the construct conflates enjoyment of thinking with self-perceived competence at it, which the self-report format cannot separate.
