Portrait Values Assessment

A 21-item profile of personal values based on Schwartz's Theory of Basic Human Values. Each item describes a person, and you rate how similar that person is to you. Ten value scales — from Self-Direction and Stimulation to Security and Tradition — map the motivational goals that guide your decisions across life and work. Scoring is ipsative: your values are ranked against each other, not compared to other people.

A 21-item profile of ten basic human values, scored ipsatively to show your personal priority structure.

  • Discover which values drive your decisions and where your motivational priorities sit relative to each other. The circular structure shows how compatible or competing your top values are — adjacent values tend to reinforce each other while opposite values create tension.

This assessment maps ten basic human values from Schwartz's Theory of Basic Human Values (Schwartz, 1992, 2003): Self-Direction, Stimulation, Hedonism, Achievement, Power, Security, Conformity, Tradition, Benevolence and Universalism. Twenty-one independently developed portrait descriptions, each depicting a person, rated on a six-point similarity scale. Scoring is ipsative — each value score is centered on your personal mean, so the profile shows your priorities relative to each other, not compared to other people. The theory and its circular structure have been validated in 80+ countries through the European Social Survey.

The ten-value structure has been confirmed in samples from 82 countries via the European Social Survey. Mean alpha across values typically .50–.70 (expected for 2-3 item scales; circular structure constrains reliability).
The circular motivational continuum is consistently recovered via multidimensional scaling and confirmatory factor analysis. Adjacent values correlate positively, opposite values negatively — a pattern confirmed in every cultural region tested.

Theory of Basic Human Values

Theory identifying ten motivationally distinct value types — self-direction, stimulation, hedonism, achievement, power, security, conformity, tradition, benevolence, universalism — arranged in a circular structure where adjacent values are compatible and opposing values conflict. The model has been validated in over 80 countries through the European Social Survey and underpins value-based approaches to career counselling and organisational culture.

What does this test measure?

It measures ten basic human values: Self-Direction, Stimulation, Hedonism, Achievement, Power, Security, Conformity, Tradition, Benevolence and Universalism. These values represent motivational goals that guide behavior across all areas of life.

What does ipsative scoring mean?

Your scores are centered around your own average. This means the profile shows which values matter more to you relative to your other values, not how you compare to other people. Everyone has all ten values — the question is the priority among them.

How long does it take?

About 5–7 minutes for 21 items.

Is this test scientifically validated?

Yes. The PVQ and Schwartz's value theory have been validated in over 80 countries through the European Social Survey and hundreds of independent studies. It is one of the most cross-culturally validated instruments in psychology.
