Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Quiz
~7 min · 25 questions · Free partial report
Emotional intelligence usually gets talked about as one thing you either have or lack. In practice it splits into parts that come apart. Plenty of people read a room instantly and cannot name their own state. Plenty of people are calm under pressure and terrible at reopening a conversation after a fight. This quiz separates five: noticing your own state while it is happening, picking up other people's, steadying yourself when the feeling is strong, repairing things afterwards, and using feeling as information without letting it decide for you. The free result shows your shape across the five and names the strongest and weakest. The full report goes into what each level looks like in ordinary situations, where two of your scores pull against each other, and which one is worth working on first, which is rarely the lowest one.
Five parts of emotional skill measured separately, because reading a room and knowing your own state are different abilities and most people are much better at one than the other.
- See emotional skill as five separate abilities rather than one score
- Find the gap between how well you read other people and how well you read yourself
- Understand which part of the cycle breaks down for you: noticing, steadying, or repairing
- Get a specific place to start rather than a general instruction to be more self-aware

What this test measures
Reading yourself
Noticing your own state while it is happening, and being able to name it rather than just carry it.
Reading others
Picking up what other people are feeling from what they do rather than what they announce.
Steadying yourself
What you can still do while a strong feeling is running. Not suppressing it, functioning alongside it.
Repairing
Reopening things after friction: apologising cleanly, checking afterwards, letting go of being right.
Using feeling
Treating an emotional reaction as information worth examining, without handing it the decision.

Questions the report answers.
Why do you find out you were upset hours after it started?
Because the signal is arriving physically before it arrives in words, and nobody taught you to read that channel. The shortcut is the body: jaw, shoulders, breathing. Those move first.
Why do quiet people surprise you?
If your score here is moderate, you are almost certainly reading loud signals well and quiet ones badly. Withdrawal is the one most people miss, because absence is harder to notice than noise.
Is staying calm the same as being steady?
No, and the difference matters. Steady means you can act well while feeling it. Calm can mean you postponed the feeling, which usually arrives later with interest.
Why is this the one worth fixing first?
Because it is the most visible from outside and the most trainable. Nobody sees you notice your own state. Everybody notices whether you came back and said something.
How do you tell a useful gut reaction from a bad one?
Ask whether the feeling is about the thing in front of you or about something it resembles. That single question separates a signal worth keeping from a pattern being replayed.
Who benefits most.
Somebody who is told they are cold
Often this is a high steadying score meeting a low reading-yourself score: you handle the situation well and never mention what it cost. The result gives you the vocabulary for the second half.
Somebody who reads everyone else and gets blindsided by themselves
The most common uneven shape here. You know exactly what everyone in the room needs and find out on Thursday that you have been furious since Monday.
Somebody after a conflict at work
The repair scale is the part of this that changes outcomes. If it comes out low, that is the finding, and it is a skill rather than a trait.
Somebody who thinks this whole area is soft nonsense
The using-feeling scale is the one for you. It is not about being emotional, it is about whether you throw away a signal because it arrived as a feeling instead of an argument.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a real EQ test?
No. It is a playful quiz. Proper measures of emotional ability exist, they are longer, and several of them ask you to solve problems rather than rate yourself. This one asks you to rate yourself, which is quicker and less reliable.
Does a high score mean I am good with people?
It means you think you are. Self-report and behaviour come apart most in exactly this area, and the people who are worst at reading others are often confident that they are good at it. Take a low score more seriously than a high one.
Why five parts instead of one number?
Because they come apart in practice. Reading a room and knowing your own state are different abilities, and the interesting result is usually the distance between two of your five, not the average.
Some questions felt like the same question twice.
Several are worded in reverse on purpose. If you agree with both a statement and its opposite, that shows up in the result rather than inflating it.
Can I use this for hiring or for my team?
No. It is playful, it is self-reported, and it is trivially easy to answer the way you would like to look. For a team conversation it is fine, as long as nobody's job depends on the outcome.
Which part should I work on first?
Usually not the lowest one. The full report explains why: repairing tends to pay off fastest, because it is the most visible to other people and the most learnable.
