Morningness-Eveningness (Circadian Typology)

Horne, J. A. & Ostberg, O. · 1976

เป็นที่รู้จักในชื่อ: Chronotype · MEQ framework · Circadian preference

Circadian typology, or chronotype, describes the stable individual difference in the phase of the internal biological clock relative to external clock time. Morning types reach their physiological and cognitive peaks earlier and prefer earlier sleep and wake times; evening types are phase-delayed on both. The trait is continuous rather than categorical, with most people intermediate, and it is grounded in measurable biology — the timing of dim-light melatonin onset and of the core body temperature minimum — which makes it one of the few personality-adjacent constructs with a direct physiological criterion.

Framework describing the stable individual difference in the phase of the internal clock: when a person's body prefers to sleep, wake, eat and perform. Horne and Östberg (1976) built the first self-assessment of morningness-eveningness and validated it against a physiological marker, the circadian rhythm of oral temperature, with morning types peaking significantly earlier than evening types. Chronotype is continuous rather than binary — most people fall between the extremes — and it shifts across the lifespan, running late in adolescence and drifting earlier through adulthood. It is a preference of phase, distinct from sleep quality, sleep duration and sleep disorders.

บริบททางประวัติศาสตร์

Horne and Ostberg published the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire in 1976, giving the field its first standard self-report instrument and validating it against body temperature rhythms. Roenneberg's Munich ChronoType Questionnaire, from 2003, took a different approach, computing chronotype from actual sleep timing on free days corrected for sleep debt, and introduced social jetlag — the mismatch between biological and social time — as a distinct and consequential quantity. Twin studies place heritability of chronotype around 50 percent, and genome-wide association studies have identified specific clock-gene variants.

โครงสร้าง

Morningness

The position of a person's internal clock on the morning-to-evening continuum: how early the body wants to wake, when sleep actually arrives, and when mind and muscles reach their best (Horne & Östberg, 1976). Morning and evening types differ in the timing of body temperature, melatonin and alertness, not in discipline. The middle is not indecision — intermediate types are the most common and the most flexible about schedule — and the position shifts across the lifespan rather than being fixed.

การประยุกต์ใช้เชิงปฏิบัติ

Chronotype predicts tolerance of shift work and is used in occupational health to design rosters, since evening types adapt better to night shifts and morning types to early ones. In education, the mismatch between adolescent phase delay and early school start times is the evidence base behind later-start policies. Clinically it informs the timing of light therapy for circadian rhythm sleep disorders. For individual self-knowledge it separates a biological disposition from a moral judgement about discipline, which is how lateness is usually read.

วิธีการวัดผล

Measured either by preference items (MEQ) or by computing mid-sleep on free days corrected for sleep debt (MCTQ); results are a continuous phase score interpreted against age-stratified norms.

ข้อวิจารณ์และข้อจำกัด

Self-report chronotype correlates with physiological phase markers only moderately, roughly .40 to .50, so questionnaire scores are an imperfect proxy for the biology they claim to index. Preference-based instruments such as the MEQ confound biological phase with social constraint: a person forced into early rising may report morning preference regardless of internal timing. Chronotype also shifts systematically with age, peaking in eveningness in late adolescence, so scores are only interpretable against age norms. Cutoffs dividing the continuum into five categories are conventional rather than empirically derived.
