Leadership Style Quiz
~7 min · 25 questions · Free partial report
Most leadership quizzes hand you one word and leave it there. The problem is that nobody leads in one mode. What actually distinguishes people is the combination, and the situations where their strongest mode is the wrong one. Five modes here. The Director decides and takes the accountability. The Coach builds the people. The Steward absorbs pressure and protects the team's focus. The Connector works across the organisation and unblocks things through relationships. The Craftsman leads by doing the work at a standard others follow. You can score high on several, and many good managers do. The free result shows your shape. The full report covers what your top two do together, the situations where your strongest mode actively hurts, and which mode you are likely to be underusing given the shape of the rest. You do not need a formal team for this to apply. Leading a project, a group of peers, or a company of one all count.
Five modes of leading, measured separately so you get a shape instead of a label. What matters is the combination, and the situation where your strongest mode backfires.
- See which of five leadership modes you use, and in what proportion
- Find out what your top two do in combination, which is more informative than either alone
- Identify the situation where your strongest mode is the wrong tool
- Spot the mode you are underusing, which is usually where the easiest improvement is

What this test measures
Director
You decide. You set direction, close open questions, and take the accountability that comes with it.
Coach
You build people. Your satisfaction comes from what somebody else became able to do.
Steward
You absorb pressure and protect focus. You filter what comes down so your team can do the work.
Connector
You lead through the network. You know who to call, and you build the relationship before you need it.
Craftsman
You lead by doing. Your own standard is the reference, and people come to you for the hard parts.

Questions the report answers.
Why do people stop bringing you options?
A very high Director score usually means decisions arrive quickly and confidently. What follows is that people pre-filter what they show you, so the option you would have rejected never reaches you, including the times you would have been wrong to reject it.
Why is teaching so hard to prioritise?
Because doing it yourself pays today and teaching pays in three months. Every busy week argues for the first, which is why low Coach scores go with high Craftsman scores so often.
What does absorbing pressure actually cost?
Context. Your team gets clean work and no view of why it matters or how close the situation was. The fix is to pass down the reasoning while still filtering the noise.
Why does the same blocker keep costing you a week?
Because the relationship that would have solved it in an hour does not exist yet, and you only look for it once you are blocked. Connectors build the map before it is needed, which is the only time it is cheap.
When does being the best practitioner become a problem?
When the hardest work routes to you by default. It gets done well and nobody else learns it, so the next hard thing routes to you too, and eventually you are the constraint.
Who benefits most.
A first-time manager
The most common shape here is very high Craftsman with low Coach, because that is who gets promoted. Seeing it stated plainly usually lands harder than being told to delegate more.
Somebody whose team is busy but not growing
Look at Steward against Coach. Absorbing everything protects the work and starves people of the context they would learn from.
Somebody who feels invisible to their own management
Very high Steward with low Connector produces exactly that: you carry a great deal, and the people who decide your future never see any of it.
A team running a session together
Comparing shapes across a management group tends to explain long-running friction faster than another conversation about values.
Frequently asked questions
I do not manage anyone. Does this still apply?
Yes. The questions are about leading work, not about having reports. Running a project, holding a group of peers together, or being the person others come to all produce a readable result.
Which combination is best?
None of them. Each pairing is good at some situations and bad at others, and the report is about that rather than about a ranking. High Director with low Steward reads very differently from the reverse, and neither is the winning answer.
Is this a real leadership assessment?
No. It is playful. Proper instruments exist, they usually collect input from the people you lead rather than from you, and that difference is the whole point of them.
Why does it warn me about self-report?
Because this is the area where self-report is least reliable. The gap between how managers describe themselves and how their teams describe them is large and well known. Read a high score as a hypothesis.
Can I use this to assess someone on my team?
No. It is playful, it is easy to answer strategically, and using it for anything with consequences for somebody's job would be misusing it. As a conversation starter in a team session it works well.
What if I score high on all five?
Two possibilities, and the report does not pretend to tell them apart. Either you genuinely work across all five modes, or you answered aspirationally. The reverse-worded statements catch some of the second case but not all of it.
Combine instruments for a fuller profile.
Each test measures different dimensions. The Integrative Chat crosses the results of all tests you complete, revealing connections no single instrument can show.
