Night Owl or Early Bird: Chronotype Quiz

~5 min · 16 questions · Free partial report

Everyone knows whether they are a morning person, right up until you ask them to be specific. The useful question is not what time you get up, which is mostly decided by your job, but when your head works best and when you would fall asleep if nobody stopped you. This places you on a single line running from strongly evening to strongly morning. Neither end is better and neither is a discipline problem. What the ends differ in is when the good hours land, and how much a schedule that ignores that costs you. The free result gives your position. The full report covers what your position means for a normal working week, which hours you should be protecting, what the other end has that you do not, and the specific kind of tiredness that comes from living against your own clock rather than from not sleeping enough.

A single axis from strongly evening to strongly morning, based on when your head works rather than when your alarm goes off. Neither end is a virtue.

What you'll discover
  • Find where you sit on the evening to morning axis, more precisely than owl or lark
  • Identify the hours when your thinking is actually sharp
  • Understand the difference between being tired and being out of phase
  • See what the opposite end does well, which is usually invisible from your side

What you will discover

Questions the report answers.

What is the difference between being tired and being out of phase?

Tiredness improves with sleep. Being out of phase does not: you can sleep eight hours and still be useless at nine in the morning, because the hours you slept were not the hours your body wanted. The tell is the weekend, when the schedule lets go and your times drift somewhere else.

Who is this for

Who benefits most.

Somebody who has been told they are lazy

The firmly-owl result is the one that gets moralised at. Being at your worst at nine in the morning is a phase problem, not an effort problem, and the report says so in plain terms.

Somebody choosing when to protect their calendar

The practical payoff is knowing which two hours to defend. Most people know roughly, and defend the wrong ones anyway.

A couple at opposite ends

One of you is finishing the day when the other is starting to shut down. Naming the axis usually converts a recurring irritation into a scheduling problem.

Somebody whose weekends look nothing like their weekdays

A large gap between the two is the clearest sign of living out of phase, and the quiz picks it up directly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real chronotype assessment?

No. Validated questionnaires for this exist and are used in sleep research. This is a playful quiz that borrows the idea, not the instrument, and nothing here identifies a sleep problem.

I have small children and no choice about my hours. How do I answer?

Answer for how you would be without the constraint. The quiz is asking about your preference, and a preference does not go away because the schedule overrides it. That gap is worth knowing about.

Can my chronotype change?

It shifts across a lifetime, and adolescence and later adulthood are the two moves most people notice. It also drifts with light exposure and habit. What it does not do is change because somebody told you to be a morning person.

Is being an early bird better?

It fits the way school and work are organised, which is not the same thing. The report says what each end costs and what each end has, and it does not recommend one.

Why do you ask about breakfast and about going to bed?

Appetite on waking and resistance to going to bed are two of the everyday signs that separate the ends most cleanly, more so than what time somebody's alarm is set for.

I came out in the middle. Is that a dodge?

No, it is the most common result. A weak clock means your energy follows sleep, food and interest more than the hour, which is easier to live with than either end.

Each test measures different dimensions. The Integrative Chat crosses the results of all tests you complete, revealing connections no single instrument can show.
