Tripartite Model of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress

Lovibond, P. F.; Lovibond, S. H. · 1995

別名: DAS Tripartite Model · Lovibond Tripartite Model · Tripartite Model

Lovibond and Lovibond's model operationalizes three distinct but related negative emotional states -- depression (characterized by low positive affect, hopelessness, and anhedonia), anxiety (characterized by physiological hyperarousal, situational anxiety, and subjective anxious affect), and stress/tension (characterized by nervous arousal, difficulty relaxing, irritability, and impatience). The model is measured by the DASS (42-item) and DASS-21 (short form), which align with Clark and Watson's (1991) tripartite model constructs of low positive affect, physiological hyperarousal, and negative affect respectively.

Model distinguishing depression (low positive affect, hopelessness, anhedonia), anxiety (autonomic arousal, situational anxiety), and stress (nervous tension, irritability, difficulty relaxing) as separable but correlated negative emotional states.

歴史的背景

Lovibond and Lovibond developed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) in the early 1990s at the University of New South Wales, publishing the foundational psychometric comparison with Beck scales in 1995. The DASS was designed to better discriminate between depression and anxiety than existing measures, drawing on Clark and Watson's (1991) tripartite model which proposed that negative affect is shared between anxiety and depression, while low positive affect is unique to depression and physiological hyperarousal is unique to anxiety. The 1998 stability study confirmed the three syndromes are selectively stable over 3-8 years.

構成概念

抑うつ

In Lovibond and Lovibond's (1995) tripartite model as operationalized in the DASS, depression is conceptualized as an emotional syndrome characterized by dysphoria, hopelessness, devaluation of life, self-deprecation, lack of interest or involvement, anhedonia, and inertia. Corresponding to the low positive affect component of Clark and Watson's (1991) tripartite model, this construct emphasizes the loss of motivation and the inability to experience pleasure as its defining features.

不安

In Lovibond and Lovibond's (1995) tripartite model as operationalized in the DASS, anxiety is conceptualized as a syndrome of autonomic arousal, skeletal muscle tension, situational anxiety, and the subjective experience of anxious affect. Corresponding to the physiological hyperarousal component of Clark and Watson's (1991) tripartite model, this construct emphasizes somatic and autonomic symptoms as its defining features, distinguishing it from the cognitive and motivational deficits that characterize depression.

ストレス

In Lovibond and Lovibond's (1995) tripartite model as operationalized in the DASS, stress is conceptualized as a state of chronic nonspecific arousal characterized by persistent nervous tension, difficulty relaxing, irritability, agitation, impatience, and being easily upset or over-reactive. Corresponding to the negative affect or general distress component shared by both depression and anxiety, this construct captures a sustained state of feeling psychologically overloaded and unable to wind down.

実践的応用

The DASS-21 is one of the most widely used self-report measures in clinical psychology and research worldwide, freely available without licensing fees. It is used for screening, diagnosis support, treatment monitoring, and outcome measurement in clinical settings, with validated cut-offs for normal, mild, moderate, severe, and extremely severe ranges. The three-factor structure allows clinicians to differentially assess depression versus anxiety versus general stress, which informs treatment selection.

測定方法

The DASS was developed through iterative factor analysis of a large item pool in non-clinical samples, and the DASS-21 was created by selecting items with the highest factor loadings. Yeung et al. (2020) conducted a meta-analytic factor analysis across 78 articles containing 117 factor analyses, largely supporting the three-factor structure.

批評と制限事項

Some factor-analytic studies have questioned the three-factor structure, with proposals for a quadripartite model including a general distress factor. Cross-cultural validation, while extensive (25+ languages), has revealed that the scale may not accurately capture emotional distress expression in non-Western societies where somatic symptoms predominate. The stress subscale has been criticized as less well-defined theoretically than depression and anxiety, with some researchers arguing it overlaps substantially with general negative affect rather than representing a distinct construct.
