Dark Triad of Personality

也被称为: Dark Triad · SD3 framework · Dark Tetrad
The Dark Triad groups three socially aversive but subclinical personality traits that had been studied in separate literatures: Machiavellianism (strategic manipulation, cynical worldview, instrumental view of other people), narcissism (grandiosity, entitlement, need for admiration) and subclinical psychopathy (callousness, impulsivity, low anxiety). Paulhus and Williams's contribution was to measure all three in the same normal-population sample and show they are correlated but empirically distinguishable, with callousness as the common core. The traits are continuous dimensions in the general population, not diagnoses.
Framework grouping three socially aversive but subclinical personality traits that had been studied separately: machiavellianism (a strategic, manipulative approach to people), narcissism (grandiosity and a need for admiration) and psychopathy (impulsivity combined with low empathy and remorse). Paulhus and Williams (2002) showed the three overlap without collapsing into one another, which is what makes them worth measuring together. Jones and Paulhus (2014) later built a brief measure with equal coverage of the three, the operationalisation this catalog's adaptation follows. The traits are dimensional and subclinical: everyone sits somewhere on all three, high scores describe a trade rather than a disorder, and research has argued that what they share is, in mirror image, the Honesty-Humility factor of the HEXACO model.

历史背景
Each trait arrived from a different tradition: Machiavellianism from Christie and Geis's 1970 social psychology work, narcissism from clinical psychoanalysis by way of Raskin and Hall's 1979 inventory, and psychopathy from Cleckley and later Hare's forensic research. Until 2002 they were rarely measured together, so nobody knew whether they were three names for one thing. Paulhus and Williams administered all three to an undergraduate sample and found intercorrelations high enough to justify a family but low enough to preserve distinctions. The Dark Tetrad, adding everyday sadism, was proposed by Chabrol and colleagues in 2009 and by Buckels and colleagues thereafter.
构念
Machiavellianism
A strategic, calculating orientation toward other people: planning ahead, managing what others know, choosing alliances for what they yield, and waiting for the right moment (Christie & Geis, 1970; measured alongside the other two traits by Jones & Paulhus, 2014). The dimension describes patience and manipulation together, which is why it predicts success in negotiation and a slow erosion of the trust that cannot be strategized into existence. It is subclinical: everyone sits somewhere on it.
Narcissism
Grandiosity, a sense of being special, and a running need for admiration (Raskin & Hall, 1979; measured alongside the other two traits by Jones & Paulhus, 2014). Confidence recruits attention and attention feeds confidence, which is part of why the trait persists; the exposure is the dependence on the mirror, since criticism or someone else's turn in the light registers as injury. The subclinical trait measured here is not narcissistic personality disorder, which is a clinical diagnosis made by a professional through interview.
Psychopathy
Impulsivity and thrill seeking combined with low empathy and little remorse (Hare's tradition, in the subclinical operationalisation of Jones & Paulhus, 2014). Of the three, it is the one most consistently linked to the harshest outcomes, and also the one that reads as composure in a crisis. The score describes where impulse and distance are doing the deciding, on a dimension the general population varies along; it is not a forensic finding and not a clinical category.
Sadism
Everyday sadism: finding other people's suffering appealing rather than merely tolerable (Buckels, Jones & Paulhus, 2013; added to the dark traits as the fourth member by Paulhus, 2014). The distinction from psychopathy is about reward and not about severity, in the source article's own words: where psychopathy is indifferent to suffering, sadism finds it attractive. In the subclinical population where it is studied, most of what the construct picks up is vicarious, an appetite for watching conflict in sport, in fiction and in games, together with a taste for cutting remarks. It is a continuous dimension of ordinary personality, not a diagnosis and not a forensic category, and research on subclinical samples has found little sign of psychological dysfunction attached to it.

In organizational research the triad predicts counterproductive work behaviour, workplace bullying, unethical decision-making and, for narcissism specifically, emergence into leadership positions without corresponding effectiveness. In social psychology it predicts short-term mating strategy, aggression and low-cost prosociality. Its legitimate applied use is self-knowledge and research; using dark-trait scores to screen job candidates is poorly supported, easily faked, and treats a normal-range continuum as if it were a disqualifying attribute.
如何测量
Measured with self-report Likert items yielding three (or four, in Tetrad versions) correlated subscale scores; there is no clinical cutoff and no diagnostic interpretation.
批评与局限
The most serious critique is redundancy: several analyses find that once Honesty-Humility from the HEXACO model is controlled, the shared variance across the triad largely disappears, suggesting the family is a rediscovery of a single low-Honesty-Humility factor. Narcissism is the weakest member, correlating with the other two less consistently and containing adaptive as well as aversive facets. The brief measures that made the literature large — the Dirty Dozen in particular — have been criticised for inadequate content coverage. Because all common measures are transparent self-reports, they are highly susceptible to impression management in any consequential setting.
