Your Inner Chinese Zodiac Sign
~9 min · 30 questions · Free partial report
The Chinese zodiac gives everybody an animal based on birth year. This does the opposite: it asks how you behave and tells you which of the twelve you actually resemble. The animals work well as temperaments because they are unusually concrete. The Ox carries things. The Rat is positioned before anybody announced there was a position. The Rabbit sees trouble coming and is elsewhere. These are recognisable in a way that abstract trait words are not. Each question puts four animals against each other in an ordinary situation, and every animal is offered in exactly ten of the thirty questions, so none can win by being asked about more often. The free result names your animal and shows the full spread. The full report covers your top two as a pair, the animal you scored lowest and what it would have given you, and what your dominant animal looks like on a day it is not working.
Twelve animals as twelve temperaments, matched by behaviour rather than by birth year. Concrete enough to recognise yourself in, which abstract trait words rarely are.
- Find which of the twelve animals your behaviour resembles
- Compare it against the animal your birth year assigns you
- See your second animal, which usually explains more than the first
- Learn what your dominant animal costs, not only what it gives

What this test measures
The Rat
Resourceful and early. You see the opening before it is announced and you would rather have three ways out than one guarantee.
The Ox
Steady and load-bearing. You do the same thing well for a very long time, and things stand because you kept standing.
The Tiger
Direct and unhesitating. You go at things, and hesitation in a room is what you notice first.
The Rabbit
Quiet and alert. You want peace and you will pay for it, and you see trouble arriving before anybody says anything.
The Dragon
Large and confident. You take up room, you ask for what you want, and you are uncomfortable being small.
The Snake
Private and considered. You decide slowly, alone, and you do not explain the reasoning afterwards.
The Horse
Restless and independent. You need to be able to leave, and being contained costs you more than being tired.
The Goat
Gentle and aesthetic. You care how things feel and how they look, and carelessness with people registers as damage.
The Monkey
Clever and amused. You find the angle nobody looked for, and you would rather be interested than correct.
The Rooster
Observant and blunt. You see what is wrong and you say it, and you keep a record whether or not anybody asked.
The Dog
Loyal and straight. You mean what you say, you stay, and hypocrisy is the thing you cannot get past.
The Pig
Generous and unbothered. You want everybody comfortable, you do not make things harder than they are, and you take actual pleasure seriously.

Questions the report answers.
Why keep more than one way out?
Because a single guarantee is a single point of failure, and you have probably watched one fail. The cost is that people who want commitment read the open options as reluctance, and they are not entirely wrong.
When does carrying become a trap?
When nobody renegotiated it and you did not either. The strength is that you do not put things down; the same fact means a load assigned five years ago is still yours unless somebody actively removes it, and nobody will.
What does going straight at things cost?
The situations that needed nothing to happen for six weeks. Directness resolves most problems faster and it converts a small number of resolvable ones into permanent ones, and you rarely find out which was which.
What do you miss by staying out of trouble?
The rooms where the decision happened. Avoiding conflict keeps you out of real damage and it keeps you out of the argument that determined your next two years, and the second cost is invisible at the time.
Why does criticism land so hard?
Because taking up room means being visible, and being visible means every correction is public even when it was not. The confidence is real and it is not armour, which is the part people consistently get wrong about you.
What do people do with your silence?
They fill it. Nobody works with a blank, so the people around you have each built a version of your reasoning out of guesses, and they are acting on those versions. The cheapest fix is saying one sentence about why, not explaining the whole thing.
Why does being contained cost more than being tired?
Because tiredness ends. What you are protecting is the ability to leave, and an arrangement that removes it does not feel like work, it feels like a wall. This is why you tolerate enormous workloads and not small restrictions.
Why do decisions take you so long?
Because you are weighing how it will feel for everybody, and that is a slower calculation with more variables. It is not indecision, though it is indistinguishable from it while it is happening, including to the people waiting.
When is the clever solution the wrong one?
When the boring version would have worked. Finding the angle is genuinely valuable and it also makes the interesting problem more attractive than the actual one, and those are not always the same problem.
Why have people started editing themselves around you?
Because being caught costs more than being wrong quietly. Nothing getting past you improves the work and raises the price of showing you something unfinished, which means you see fewer early drafts than anybody else.
Why does betrayal take you so long to get over?
Because you did not have a category for it. Being entirely straight yourself means the possibility was not in your model, so it is not just the act you are processing, it is the revision of how you thought people worked.
Is being taken advantage of a problem?
You have probably already decided it is not. Generosity by default gets exploited occasionally and buys a great deal the rest of the time, and doing the arithmetic in advance is the difference between generous and naive.
Who benefits most.
Somebody who knows their birth animal and never believed it
This gives you the one your behaviour matches. The distance between the two is the part worth talking about.
Somebody who took the western zodiac test here
Worth doing both. They use different vocabularies and different situations, and where they agree is more informative than either alone.
Two people comparing
The useful comparison is whether your dominant animal is the other person's lowest. That is where recurring misunderstanding usually lives.
Somebody who finds trait words meaningless
The animals are concrete. Carrying things, being positioned early, seeing trouble coming, are easier to test yourself against than conscientious or agreeable.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the animal of my birth year?
No, and it is designed not to be. Nothing here is calculated from a date. It asks how you behave and reports which of the twelve temperaments your answers most resemble.
What if it disagrees with my birth-year animal?
That is the common outcome and the interesting one. Your birth animal was assigned; this one was earned by thirty answers you just gave about yourself.
How is this different from the western zodiac test here?
Different twelve, different situations, genuinely different result. The animals are more concrete than the western signs, which makes them easier to recognise yourself in and harder to argue with.
Is astrology real?
Not as a science, and this does not claim otherwise. The twelve animals survive as a shared way of describing people, which is what is being borrowed.
Could one animal win by appearing more often?
No. Every animal is offered in exactly ten of the thirty questions. That constraint was built in first and the questions were written against it.
Are the descriptions flattering?
Half of each one is not. Every animal has a version in the report that other people find difficult, because a description containing only the good half is useless for recognising yourself.
