Affection Style Quiz
~6 min · 20 questions · Free partial report
Most people assume everyone shows care the way they do, and then get quietly hurt when it does not come back in the same shape. This quiz is about that mismatch. There are five styles here. The Voiced One says it. The Steady One keeps showing up. The Fixer removes the obstacle. The Close One shortens the distance. The Keeper remembers and marks what mattered. None of them is warmer than the others, and everybody uses all five. What differs is which one you reach for first, especially when you are tired or the moment is difficult. Every question makes you drop three of them and keep one, which is why the result is a ranking rather than a score. The free version names your top style. The full report covers what your style looks like from the other side, the style you are worst at receiving, and what tends to go wrong when your first style meets somebody whose first style is different.
Five ways of showing you care, ranked by what you actually do rather than what you believe about yourself. The mismatch between two people's top styles explains a lot of ordinary hurt.
- Find out which of five ways of showing care you default to
- See which style you are worst at receiving, which is often the more useful finding
- Understand the specific mismatch that makes affection go unnoticed between two people
- Get language for something most couples argue about without having words for it

What this test measures
The Voiced One
You put it into words. Feelings that go unsaid feel to you like feelings that did not happen.
The Steady One
You show care by being reliable over a long time. Your affection is measured in years, not moments.
The Fixer
You remove the obstacle. Care, to you, is making somebody's life materially easier without being asked.
The Close One
You shorten the distance. Being in the same room is doing something, and being far away costs you.
The Keeper
You remember. You hold the shared history and bring it back at the moment it is needed.

Questions the report answers.
Why does silence from other people hurt you more than it should?
Because you encode care in words, so the absence of words reads as the absence of care. It usually is not. The people around you may be showing it in a channel you are not tuned to.
Why does nobody thank you for consistency?
Because a rhythm is only visible when it breaks. If you want it seen, the uncomfortable answer is that you have to say it, which is the style you use least.
Why does helping sometimes land badly?
Because solving a problem someone has not finished feeling can read as impatience. The fix is small: ask whether they want help or company, and believe the answer.
Why is distance so much harder for you than for other people?
Because proximity is not a preference for you, it is the channel itself. Long stretches apart do not just feel sad, they feel like the relationship went quiet, even when it did not.
Why do you remember things nobody else does?
Because holding the record is how you hold the relationship. The cost is asymmetry: you notice every date that passes unmarked, and the other person genuinely did not.
Who benefits most.
A couple who keep having the same argument
One of you says the other never shows it, the other says they show it constantly. Both are usually telling the truth. Naming the two styles tends to end that particular loop.
Somebody who feels unappreciated and cannot explain why
Care is arriving, just not in the shape you read as care. Finding out which shape you are deaf to is often more useful than finding out your own style.
Somebody with a parent they struggle to talk to
A lot of families run on The Fixer and The Steady One while the children were hoping for The Voiced One. It does not fix anything, but it reframes it.
Somebody starting something new
Knowing what you need, in words, before the first misunderstanding is cheaper than working it out afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the five love languages?
No. That is a separate framework published by another author, and this quiz has no connection to it and is not endorsed by anyone associated with it. Ours was written from scratch and divides the ground differently: The Keeper is about shared memory rather than gift giving, and The Steady One is about duration rather than doing chores. If you already know that other framework you will spot both the overlap and the places where the two do not line up. We name it here so you know what you are not getting, which seemed more useful than leaving you to guess.
Does this only work for romantic relationships?
No. The questions cover friends, family and partners on purpose. Most people use the same style across all three, though not everyone does.
Is it based on research?
No. It is a playful test. The styles are useful language, not measurements, and nothing here predicts whether a relationship will last.
What if I get two styles almost level?
That is common and the report treats it as a blend. Voiced plus Fixer behaves quite differently from Voiced plus Close, and the pairing is usually more recognisable than the winner on its own.
Can two people take it and compare?
Yes, and that is the most useful way to use it. The interesting comparison is not whether your top styles match, it is whether your top style is the one the other person is worst at receiving.
The questions made me think of one specific person. Is that a problem?
No, it is normal. Keep that person in mind for the whole quiz rather than switching between people, or the result will be an average of relationships that do not resemble each other.
