How You Actually Get Things Done

~6 min · 20 คำถาม · รายงานบางส่วนฟรี

Almost nobody finishes work the way the productivity advice says to. There is a mechanism that actually does it for you, you have been running on it for years, and most people have never named it. There are five here. The Lister keeps the system outside their head. The Sprinter runs on pressure and does the work in the last stretch. The Metronome puts the same hours against the same work every day and lets accumulation do it. The Burrower needs one long uninterrupted run and gets more from an afternoon than from a fortnight of fragments. The Pledger promises it to a person, and the promise is what makes it real. None of them is the good one. Each has a failure mode that its owner is the last to see, and the useful part of the result is usually the second one rather than the first. Every question makes you drop three and keep one, which is why the result is a ranking rather than a score. That is deliberate: asked separately, everybody agrees they use all five, and five identical answers describe nobody. The free result names your top mechanism. The full report covers what your top two do in combination, the specific way your method fails and what it looks like from outside, and what happens on a team where two people run on different engines and each thinks the other is disorganised.

Five mechanisms that actually finish work, ranked by what you do rather than by what you would like to be true. Not a measure of how productive you are, and not a verdict on putting things off.

สิ่งที่คุณจะค้นพบ
  • Name the mechanism that actually finishes your work, rather than the one you intend to use
  • Find your second one, which is what you fall back on when the first is unavailable
  • See the failure mode of your method, which is the part nobody tells you
  • Understand why a colleague who works nothing like you is not being difficult

แบบทดสอบนี้วัดอะไร

The Lister

The system lives outside your head. Everything you owe anybody is captured somewhere, and the capturing is what stops the dropping.

The Sprinter

Pressure is the engine. The work happens in the last available stretch, at a speed nobody can reach on a quiet Tuesday.

The Metronome

The same hours against the same work, whether or not it is going well. Accumulation does the job that intensity does for other people.

The Burrower

One long run with nothing reaching you. Four uninterrupted hours are worth more to you than a fortnight cut into pieces.

The Pledger

You promise it to a person, and the promise is what makes it real. Work nobody is waiting for is the work that does not happen.

คำถามที่รายงานตอบ

  • When does the system start doing the work instead of you?

At the point where maintaining it feels productive. Capturing, sorting and restructuring all produce the sensation of progress and none of them move the difficult item, which is why a tidy system and a stalled project sit together so often. The honest test is whether the hardest thing on the list is in the same position it was in a week ago.

  • Why does working late in the day work so well and fail so badly?

Because pressure genuinely does raise your speed, and it does it by removing the option of overthinking, which is real. What it also removes is slack. A method with no slack performs perfectly right up until two dates land in the same week, and then it does not degrade gradually the way other methods do; it fails all at once, and always on the piece of work that mattered most.

  • Why is restarting so much harder than continuing?

Because your method does not run on motivation, it runs on the slot already existing. While the rhythm is intact each session costs you almost nothing to begin, which is the whole advantage. Once it breaks, beginning becomes a decision again, and it is a decision you are out of practice at making. Two disrupted weeks cost you more than they cost anybody working another way, and the way back is to restore the slot at half the length rather than to wait until you can do it properly.

  • What is the real cost of waiting for the clear run?

The work that never had a clear day available. Long uninterrupted stretches produce your best output and they are also the scarcest thing in most working lives, so a method that depends on them quietly filters your output down to whatever happened to get one. Some things are worth doing in fragments and badly, and recognising which ones is the difference between the method serving you and the method deciding for you.

  • Why is your own work always last?

Because the mechanism needs somebody on the other end, and for your own projects there is nobody there. This is not a discipline failure and it does not respond to trying harder; it responds to manufacturing the missing half. A person who expects a draft on Thursday works better than a note to yourself saying Thursday, and the person does not have to be anybody important. They only have to ask.

เหมาะสำหรับใคร

ใครได้ประโยชน์มากที่สุด

Somebody who has tried every system and stayed with none

Usually a low Lister score, and the finding is that the systems were never the problem. If your mechanism is The Burrower or The Pledger, adopting a capture system solves a problem you do not have while leaving the one you do have untouched.

A manager who thinks one of their team is disorganised

Worth checking whether they are a Sprinter reporting to a Metronome. Nothing is going wrong, the work arrives, and it arrives at a point in the week that makes the other person deeply uncomfortable. The report has language for that conversation.

Somebody whose own projects never move

Usually a very high Pledger. Everything owed to another person is delivered and everything owed to yourself is not, which is not a discipline problem: it is your engine having nothing to run on.

Somebody who was fine before the calendar filled up

High Burrower meeting a job with six meetings a day. The hours are still there and the runs are gone, and the report is direct about the fact that the fix is structural rather than motivational.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Is this about procrastination?

No, and it is worth being clear about it. This asks which mechanism finishes your work, not how much of it arrives late. Someone can rank very high on The Sprinter and never miss a date, because working in the last stretch on purpose is a method and not a slip. If what you want is how much you put off, that is a different question with a level to it, and this page cannot give you one.

Is this measuring how productive I am?

No, and it is built so that it cannot. There is no total. Every question makes you choose between five ways of working, so the result is only ever how they rank against each other. Somebody who gets a great deal done and somebody who gets very little done can produce the same ranking.

Why can nobody score 100 on a mechanism?

Because each question offers four of the five, so no mechanism is on the page every single time. Your percentages rank the five against each other rather than measuring how much of each you have, and the highest any single one can reach here is eighty.

Two of mine came out level.

Common, and the pair usually describes you better than the winner alone. The Burrower with The Lister underneath works very differently from The Burrower with The Sprinter underneath: the first protects the long run in advance, the second ends up taking it at the last possible moment.

Can my employer run this on the team?

As a conversation, yes, and it is quite a good one, because most arguments about how somebody works are two mechanisms colliding rather than one person being disorganised. As anything with consequences, no. It is a playful test, it is easy to answer strategically, and nothing here should ever touch anybody's job, pay or standing.

I use all five depending on the week.

Everybody does, and that is exactly why the format makes you choose. Asked one at a time, nearly everyone endorses all five and the result describes nobody. Answer for the last six months and the ranking still comes out, because what you fall back on under pressure is more stable than what you use when everything is calm.
