Do You Live in the Past or Chase the New
~5 min · 16 คำถาม · รายงานบางส่วนฟรี
Everybody has both. There is a pull toward the thing you already know is good, and a pull toward the thing you have not done yet, and almost nobody is balanced between them despite almost everybody claiming to be. This is one line with two ends. The nostalgic end returns: the same restaurant, the same album, the record collection, the route you know, the thing you have already got good at. It is not laziness and it is not fear. It is the accurate observation that you already found something that works and that most new things are worse. The novelty end goes: the place that just opened, the field you know nothing about, the road you have not driven. It is not restlessness for its own sake either. It is the accurate observation that you cannot know what is good until you have tried it, and that a life spent inside what you already know narrows without ever announcing that it is narrowing. Both ends are right about the thing they are right about, and both fail in a predictable way. The seven-point scale is deliberate: with five points people gather in the middle, and here the distance from the middle is the whole point. The free result gives your position. The full report covers what your end is costing you, what the other end knows that you keep having to learn again, and the specific failure of sitting near the middle.
One axis between the already-known and the untried. Both ends are right about something, and both go wrong in a way you can predict.
- Find where you sit between returning to what you know and going toward what you do not
- Understand the characteristic failure of your end rather than the caricature of it
- See what the other end is right about
- Learn why the middle is not automatically the balanced position

Anyone who has been called set in their ways, or told they never stick with anything

คำถามที่รายงานตอบ
Why does the new thing stop being interesting in year three?
Because the reward you were getting was the reward of the first time, and it is not available twice. Everything is generous at the start: the improvement is fast, the terrain is unmapped, and you cannot be bad at it yet in a way that means anything. Then the curve flattens and what is left is the ordinary long middle, which is where almost all the real skill in anything is built and where almost nobody who came for the first time stays. The people who become formidable at things are not the ones who found them most interesting at the start. They are the ones who were still there when it was boring.
ใครได้ประโยชน์มากที่สุด
Somebody who has been called set in their ways
Usually said as a criticism, and the report does not treat it as one. What it does instead is separate the two things bundled into that phrase: preferring what you already know is good, which is a position, and no longer being able to tell whether it is still good, which is the actual cost.
Somebody who never sticks with anything
A strongly novelty-seeking result plus a shelf of half-learned skills is a recognisable combination, and the report is precise about where the leaving happens. It is almost always at the point where the thing stops being new, which is also the point where it starts getting interesting.
Two people planning a holiday
This is the axis behind most of that argument. One person wants the place that worked last time and the other wants somewhere neither of them has been, and both experience the other as missing the point of a holiday.
Somebody at the end of a long chapter
A job finishing or a relationship ending is the moment this axis stops being a preference and becomes a decision. Worth knowing which end you lean from before you make it, because your lean will feel like the obvious answer either way.
คำถามที่พบบ่อย
Is the novelty end the better one?
No, and the report is written to avoid implying it, which takes some care because everything else on the subject implies it. Openness to new things is treated as a virtue and attachment to familiar things as a failure of nerve. Both ends know something real. One end knows that most new things are worse than the thing you already found. The other knows that you cannot tell what is good without trying it. Neither of those is wrong.
Does the middle mean I am balanced?
It means you use both. Whether that is judgement depends on something the quiz cannot see: whether you pick the end that suits the situation, or the end that suits how you feel today. The useful check is whether you can name a time you did the opposite of what you felt like doing.
Is this the same as the test about past, present and future?
No, and the two come apart constantly. That one asks which tense your attention runs in when nothing is demanding it. This one asks whether the already-known pulls harder on you than the untried, which is a question about taste. Somebody can chase new experiences relentlessly and still spend most of their week replaying a conversation from four years ago.
How does this relate to the Sensation Seeking questionnaire here?
It sits near it and it is not it. That one is a real instrument, with a sample behind it, and it asks about appetite for intensity and risk. This is playful, it was written by us, and it asks a narrower and quieter question about the familiar against the untried, which includes plenty of people who want new things and want none of them to be dangerous.
Why 7 points instead of 5?
Because on this question almost everybody puts themselves slightly toward the new end, since that is the answer people approve of. Seven points gives room to lean without committing to an extreme, and it makes the distance from the middle readable, which is the part worth seeing.
Can my result change?
Yes, and more than you would expect, because this one moves with circumstances rather than only with temperament. Small children, a demanding job, an illness in the family: any of them can push a strongly novelty-seeking person to the other end for years. If your result does not match how you think of yourself, the question is which version of your life you were answering about.
