What You Build Your Identity On
~5 min · 15 問 · 無料の簡易レポート
Ask somebody who they are and they will usually answer with one thing. Their work, or their family, or where they come from. It is rarely one thing, and the interesting part is not which anchor is largest but how the weight is distributed, because that is what decides how much a single loss can take with it. Five anchors are measured here separately. Work is the role, the thing you would name if a stranger asked what you are. People is the specific relationships that would take your life apart if they went. Conviction is a set of things you hold to be true regardless of the situation. Craft is a skill you have practised, whether or not anybody pays for it. Place is a physical somewhere that explains part of you. Every answer is a slider rather than a set of boxes, because the honest answer to most of these is in between and a five-point scale forces you to round. There is no total and no winner. Two people who both come out high on Work can have completely different profiles underneath, and the difference is the whole finding. The free result shows how your weight is distributed. The full report covers what your heaviest two do in combination, what happens to somebody with your distribution when one anchor is removed, and the specific blind spot that comes with resting a great deal on very few things.
Five things a person can rest their sense of self on, measured one at a time with sliders because it is a matter of degree. No total and no winner: what the result shows is a distribution.
- See where the weight of who you are is actually resting, rather than which answer you give first
- Find out how concentrated your identity is, which matters more than which anchor is largest
- Understand why a change in one area hits you harder or softer than it hits other people
- Notice an anchor you have been carrying without counting it

このテストで測定されるもの
Work
The role. What you would name if a stranger asked what you are, and how much of you would go if it went.
People
The specific relationships your life is built around. Not sociability, but the two or three whose absence would rearrange everything.
Conviction
Things you hold to be true whatever the situation, and check hard decisions against. This says nothing about where they came from.
Craft
A skill you have practised until it became yours. Being good at a particular thing, whether or not anybody pays for it.
Place
A physical somewhere that explains part of you. A house, a city, a landscape, a country you can be homesick for.

レポートが答える質問。
What does a high Work anchor actually cost?
It converts ordinary professional events into personal ones. A restructure, a project cancelled, a bad review: for somebody low on this anchor these are annoying, and for somebody high on it they arrive somewhere much closer in. That is the same mechanism that produces the depth and the standards, so it cannot simply be dialled down. What can be done is to make sure at least one other anchor is carrying real weight before the day the role changes without asking you.
Is resting on people a weakness?
No, and treating it as one is how people end up with an identity nobody else has any part in. Being held between yourself and a few specific people is the version of a self that is hardest to build alone, and it is worth what it costs. The genuine exposure is narrower than the usual caution: it is that your sense of who you are moves with events in somebody else's life, over which you have no say at all.
Why is Conviction the steadiest anchor when something goes wrong?
Because it is the only one of the five that does not depend on circumstances holding still. Work can end, people can go, a place can become unavailable and a craft can be taken by an injury. What you hold to be true is not exposed to any of that, which is why it carries so well in a bad year. The corresponding risk is slow rather than sudden: a frame that is never re-examined stops being something you hold and becomes something that holds you, and the changeover is invisible from inside.
Why is Craft different from Work even when they look identical?
Because a craft belongs to you and a role belongs to an arrangement. They can be the same activity and they behave completely differently when something moves: the employer changes and the role goes, while the skill walks out with you. That is why people who score high on Craft and moderate on Work handle career upheaval so much better than the reverse, and it is also the argument for keeping one thing you are good at that nobody is paying you for.
Why does Place get left out of big decisions?
Because it is the hardest of the five to put in a sentence that sounds like a reason. Money, career and family all have language that works in a serious conversation, and I feel like myself there does not, so it gets dropped from the list and then does its work anyway. People who move for good reasons and are quietly unhappy two years later have usually not made a mistake about the reasons; they left an anchor out of the arithmetic because it embarrassed them to name it.
最も効果的な方。
Somebody deciding whether to move for a job
Look at Place against Work before anything else. The two get weighed as money and career and almost never as anchors, and a high Place score is the single most common reason a move that made sense on paper goes badly in the second year.
Somebody who has just retired or left a long career
A very high Work score explains most of the difficulty, and it is not a failure to adjust. The useful part of the report is the section on what the other four were carrying while Work was carrying most of it.
Somebody rebuilding after a large loss
This is the case the distribution matters most for. What is left standing is not random, and seeing which anchors were already load-bearing before the loss usually explains both what has been hardest and what has surprisingly held.
Somebody who finds the question who are you annoying
Fair enough, and this asks it in a way you can actually answer. Five sliders and no total, and the output is a distribution rather than a label.
よくある質問
Is the Conviction anchor about religion?
No, and it is deliberately built so that it cannot be. It names no faith, no doctrine and no practice, and it does not ask whether you follow one. It asks whether part of who you are rests on things you hold to be true regardless of the situation. That describes a devout person, and it equally describes somebody with no religion at all and a firm sense of what is right, and this test cannot tell the two apart on purpose.
Why sliders instead of the usual boxes?
Because how much of you rests on something is a matter of degree, and the honest answer to most of these is in between. A five-point scale makes you round. One practical note: move the slider on every question even when your answer is the middle, because an untouched slider is not recorded as an answer.
Which distribution is the healthy one?
There is not one, and the report does not pretend otherwise. Somebody concentrated in a single anchor tends to be excellent at that thing and more exposed if it goes. Somebody spread across five is harder to knock over and rarely reaches the same depth in anything. That is a trade and not a ranking.
Nothing came out high for me.
Two things can produce that, and they are different. One is a genuinely light distribution, which is a real way to be and travels extremely well. The other is that your actual anchor is not among these five, and there are plenty that are not here. The result is still useful in that case: it has told you the answer is somewhere else.
Can this change?
Yes, and it moves more than most quiz results. Anchors shift after any large event, and they also shift quietly: the anchor that carried you at twenty-five is often not the one carrying you at forty, and people usually notice the swap years after it happened rather than while it was happening.
What does the full report add?
What your heaviest two do in combination, what happens to a distribution like yours when one anchor is removed, and the blind spot that comes with your particular shape. Concentration and spread each have one, and they are not the same one.
