Your Money Personality

~4 min · 20 問 · 無料の簡易レポート

There is a version of this subject that sorts everybody into four or five named characters, and it is popular because it is fun to be one. This is not that. Five separate habits are measured here, they do not combine into a character, and most people are high on two of them and low on two others in a combination nobody has given a name to. The five are: whether you know where it goes, how fast a want turns into a purchase, how much is held back rather than in use, whether money is something you can talk about out loud, and how much of it moves toward other people. Those are genuinely independent. Somebody can track every transaction and still buy the first thing they see. Somebody can hold a large amount back and be completely unable to say that is more than I want to spend. None of the five has a correct level, and that matters more here than in most quizzes, because money advice is full of prescriptions. Tracking everything can be a way of watching rather than deciding. Holding a great deal back is a choice with a price attached, paid in the years you did not spend it. What the report does is describe the combination rather than grade it. This is the other half of the financial literacy quiz on this site. That one asks what you know. This asks what you do, and the two come apart more often than they meet.

Five money habits, measured separately because they are separate. No named types, no four boxes, and no verdict about what you should be doing.

このテストで測定されるもの

Knowing Where It Goes

Whether you have a real picture of your own numbers. Not whether you budget, and not whether you are careful. Whether you could say, without looking, roughly what last month cost you.

How Fast A Want Becomes A Purchase

The distance between deciding you want something and owning it. For some people that gap is an hour and for others it is three weeks of the thing sitting in a basket.

What Is Held Back

How much of your money is deliberately not in use. Money set aside for a future version of you, kept still on purpose, and not counted as available.

Whether It Can Be Said Out Loud

Whether money is a thing you can name in a conversation. Saying an amount is more than you want to spend, knowing what your friends earn, telling somebody what you paid.

What Moves Toward Other People

Rounds, gifts, lending, covering somebody quietly. How much of your money reaches other people, and how little bookkeeping you do about it afterwards.

レポートが答える質問。

  • Why does knowing the numbers change so little?

Because knowing and deciding are different activities and only one of them feels like work. A complete record produces the feeling of having addressed the subject, which is the same feeling you would get from actually changing something and costs a great deal less. The test is simple and slightly uncomfortable: name one thing you spend on that is different because of what your tracking told you. If nothing comes, the tracking is a hobby rather than a tool.

  • What does waiting a week actually do?

It does not make you wiser, and it is not about self-control. It gives you one piece of information you cannot otherwise get, which is whether you still want the thing when the moment that produced the wanting has passed. Most fast purchases survive that test perfectly well. The point of the week is not to prevent them, it is to find out which ones would not have survived it, and that number tells you more about your own pattern than any budget will.

  • What does holding money back cost?

Time, and it is paid in a currency no statement records. Money held still is a year you did not take, a thing you did not do while you were the right age for it, an experience deferred to a version of you who may want something else. This is not an argument against holding it back, which protects you in the month that goes wrong. It is an argument for knowing that there is a price on both sides, because only one of the two ever gets stated out loud.

  • Why is one sentence about money so hard to say?

Because naming an amount as too much feels like disclosing something about yourself rather than stating a preference, and the fear is that it will be heard as a confession. In practice it almost never is. The sentence that works is plain and short, and it says nothing about your circumstances: that is more than I want to spend on this. Said once, early, it usually turns out that at least one other person in the conversation was waiting for somebody to go first.

  • Why does deciding the number in advance matter?

Because in the moment there is only one thing in front of you, which is the person asking, and the other side of the scale is not in the room. Nobody is weighing a request against their own capacity while the request is being made, and this is why generous people end up further out than they intended without a single bad decision. One number, decided when nobody is asking, does all the work: it lets you keep saying yes without the yes being unbounded.

Somebody who tracks everything and changes nothing

A high first score with a high third or second is a common pair, and the report is direct about the difference between an accurate record and a decision. Most people who feel bad about their money have better data than they think and fewer decisions than they think.

Somebody who cannot say an amount is too much

Usually shows up as a low fourth score with everything else in order. The cost lands on evenings and weekends rather than on the balance, and the report is specific about the one sentence that fixes it.

Two people about to combine their money

The useful comparison is not who is more careful. It is where you differ on speed and on what gets held back, because those two produce almost all of the arguments and neither of them is about being careful.

Somebody who is always the one paying

A high fifth score is a real trait rather than a habit of being taken advantage of, and it is worth knowing which one it is. The report separates them, and the difference is whether the number was ever decided in advance.

よくある質問

よくある質問

Which of the five is the good one to be high on?

None of them, and the report is built so that no combination reads as the winning one. Every one of the five has a cost at the top as well as at the bottom, and the two that people expect to be virtues are the clearest cases: knowing exactly where your money goes can substitute for deciding where it goes, and holding a great deal back is paid for in years you did not spend it.

Is this one of the money type frameworks?

No. There are published models that sort people into named money types, and Money Scripts is the one most readers will have met. This is not that model, it does not implement it, and it does not produce a type at all. You get five separate levels and no character, which is deliberate: the interesting information is in the combination, and a name would flatten it.

Is this the same as the financial literacy quiz here?

No, and they are designed to be the two halves. That one asks what you know and has right answers. This one asks what you do and has none. The pairing people find most useful is a high score there with a low one on knowing where it goes here, which is extremely common and describes somebody who understands the theory of their own finances perfectly.

Is this financial advice?

No, and it is nowhere near it. It describes habits, it recommends no products, it does not know your circumstances, and a result here should not move a single decision about your actual money. Anybody who needs a decision made should be talking to somebody qualified rather than reading a quiz.

Is this built on real research?

No. It is playful. Financial behaviour is studied properly and real instruments exist for parts of it. The five habits here are ours, they were not measured against a sample, and no result predicts anything about your finances.

My answers depend on how the month is going.

Almost everybody's do, and three of the five move with income rather than with character. Holding back, giving outward and speed all look completely different in a tight year. If your result surprises you, the question worth asking is which year you were answering about.
