Past, Present or Future: Where You Live
~5 min · 18 問 · 無料の簡易レポート
There is a tense your mind goes back to when nothing is demanding it. For some people it is what already happened: the conversation from years ago, the precedent, the way it went last time. For others it is the room they are in. For others it is a thing that has not happened yet, rehearsed in detail, sometimes several versions of it. This is not about being organised or sentimental. It is about where the attention goes when it is free, which turns out to explain a lot of ordinary friction between people. Somebody who lives forward finds it strange that an old argument still has weight. Somebody who lives backward finds it strange that a plan for next year can occupy an evening. Every question makes you pick one of the three, so the result ranks them against each other rather than measuring how much of each you have. Because all three are offered every time, one of them can take everything: an eighteen for eighteen result is possible here, which is not true of most quizzes shaped like this one. The free result names the tense you live in. The full report covers what your quietest one is costing you, what the people around you experience when your tense and theirs do not match, and the specific way each of the three goes wrong.
Three tenses, ranked by which one your attention actually runs in. Not about memory, planning skill or being organised.
- Find out which tense your attention runs in when nothing is demanding it
- See how far apart your loudest and quietest tenses are
- Understand the characteristic failure of each of the three
- Notice where your tense and somebody else's keep missing each other

このテストで測定されるもの
The Backward Look
Attention that goes to what already happened. You reason from precedent, you replay, and the last time something like this came up is the first place you look.
The Near Field
Attention that stays on what is in front of you. This week, this room, this conversation. What is finished is finished and what is coming has not arrived.
The Forward Lean
Attention that runs ahead. Versions of what could happen, rehearsed conversations, and a running estimate of where the current thing leads.

レポートが答える質問。
Why does a settled argument keep coming back?
Because it is not settled in the sense that matters to you. An argument closes socially when both people stop having it, and it closes internally when you have an account of it you can live with. Those are different events and the first one does not cause the second. What keeps a ten-year-old exchange alive is almost always a line you did not get to say, and the reason it stays available is that nothing has ever replaced it.
What is the cost of being fully in the room?
Two jobs go undone, and neither of them announces itself. Nothing accumulates into a lesson, so the same mistake stays available in a way it would not for somebody who reviews. And nothing gets set up far enough ahead, so opportunities arrive already closed. Both costs are invisible from inside, because from inside the week simply went well.
Why does arriving feel like nothing?
Because you got there first, in your head, some time ago. Attention that runs ahead does the anticipating in advance and spends the feeling there, so the actual event has nothing left to deliver. This is the specific and rarely named cost of living forward, and it is why people with a strong forward lean often report that good things happen to them and none of them land.
最も効果的な方。
Somebody told they live in the past
Usually said as a criticism and rarely with any detail attached. The report separates the two things that get bundled together under that phrase: reasoning from precedent, which is a strength, and holding an unfinished argument open, which is a cost.
Somebody who cannot stop planning
A dominant forward lean plus a faint near field is the combination that produces a well-arranged life nobody is enjoying. The report is specific about what that looks like from the inside, which is usually not restlessness but a low hum of not-yet.
Two people whose tenses do not match
One wants to talk about how it went, the other about what to do next, and both experience the other as missing the point. Naming the axis converts it from a disagreement about the subject into a difference about the tense.
Somebody about to make a large decision
Worth knowing which tense you are about to make it in, because each one has a characteristic blind spot and yours is the one you cannot see from inside.
よくある質問
Can somebody actually score 100?
Yes, and this quiz is unusual in that respect. Every question offers all three tenses, so nothing stops one of them taking every choice: eighteen out of eighteen is a hundred, with the other two on nothing. Most quizzes shaped like this cannot reach their own top, because each option only appears in some of the questions. Here the average result is a third each, and anything above that means one tense is taking attention the other two are not getting.
Is this the same as asking which chapter of my life I am in?
No, and the two come apart more often than you would expect. A chapter is a period you are living through. This is where your attention goes inside any ordinary week of it. Somebody at the very start of something new can spend that whole week thinking about what already happened, and somebody who has been in the same job for a decade can spend it entirely on next year.
Is this about preferring old things to new ones?
No. That is a question about taste, and this one is about tense. You can live almost entirely in the past in the sense measured here, meaning your attention keeps going back to what happened, while wanting nothing to do with old films, old furniture or the way things used to be done.
Is the present the healthy one?
No, and the report is built to avoid saying so. Each of the three does a job the other two cannot: the backward look is where lessons come from, the near field is where the work actually gets done, and the forward lean is what stops things arriving unprepared. A very high present score means two of those jobs are not being done by you.
Is this built on real research?
No. It is playful. Attention and time perspective are studied properly and there are real instruments for it. This is not one of them, it borrows the idea rather than the method, and no result here predicts anything about you.
Can my result change?
Quite a lot of it can, and it moves faster than most quiz results do. A new baby, a house move, a frightening month, the end of something long: any of them can pull a whole tense forward or backward for a year. If your result surprises you, the useful question is what is going on right now that would explain it.
