Reactive and Self-Regulative Temperament

Adult temperament as individual differences in reactivity — the arousability of motor, affective, and autonomic systems — and self-regulation through effortful control processes that modulate reactivity. Rothbart's developmental model identifies four broad factors in adults: effortful control, negative affect, extraversion/surgency, and orienting sensitivity, each reflecting stable neurobiological substrates.
